My husband and I had been doing Yoga at home on and off for the last five years or so along with our other regular exercise. I had heard about RFT through my good friend Jacquie who had been achieving fantastic results with the RFT Trainers and had started doing Yoga as part of her fitness regime.
I was diagnosed with psoriatic arthritis and lumber spondylosis in 2012 and often suffered from bursitis in my hips. My Rheumatologist had me on medication and I was also taking anti-inflammatory medication regularly (too regularly for my liking!). I was keen to try and do something about the medication and I was having a stressful time due to our home severely damaged in a storm and we were rebuilding and dealing with insurance companies and builders. My Rheumatologist felt if I stepped up my Yoga practice it would help me a great deal as in her words I also had other “mechanical” issues in my body! Not to mention helping to relieve the stress. And I’m very good at carrying stress in my body!
So I joined Jacquie on one of her Yoga sessions at RFT in August 2017 and trialled a few more classes during the next week and basically you could say I am now hooked on Yoga. I started on a 11 session pack, then went to monthly packs and now I am on a 6 month unlimited. I attend at least 4 Yoga sessions a week and if my work schedule permits I can get to do 6! I LOVE MY YOGA.
I admit to being apprehensive about starting, how would I go? Was I doing the poses correctly? Would I get my breathing right? How would I really feel? I had nothing to worry about all the Yoga teachers are so welcoming and help you along the way, correcting your postures if needed, talking you through and reminding you about your breathing and now that I have improved also giving me options to put more into my poses if necessary.
The RFT team are great. Even though I don’t attend any of the trainers’ sessions they are all so supportive of me and my Yoga, they are friendly and go out of their way to be helpful and encouraging.
I have met so many lovely people and made new friends. We have had lots of laughs at times and encourage each other as we go. Since the end of 2017 my husband Bryan has been joining me at a couple of sessions a week, when his work permits. He is really enjoying the Yoga classes too and getting great benefit from them as well. He is happy as he has extended his Yoga repertoire!
And the good news….. yesterday I had my three monthly check up with my Rheumatologist. I have been off my “serious” meds for 4 months, I haven’t had an anti-inflammatory tablet for over a month and all my blood work was great and my Dr doesn’t want to see me for 6 months!!!
I feel so much better both physically and mentally. My body is so much more toned and yes you can lose weight doing Yoga! I lost three kilos when I first started and I have maintained that weight since then. My flexibility has improved greatly and I enjoy the challenges of some of the harder poses, especially when you finally succeed. And best of all you really do float out of a class and feel good for the rest of the day or night.
I look forward to seeing you in one of RFT’s many Yoga classes.
Thanks RFT Yogis and Trainers!
